XML-RPC Service for you blog cannot be found

  1. Aloha, I have a WP blog v2.8 (self-hosted) and I have enabled XML-RPC protocols for remote publishing of my posts. None of my plugins are the culprit but I still receive the error msg: "XML-RPC Service for you blog cannot be found" when I try to access my blog from my iPhone. Any thoughts?

  2. I've got the same problem. I'm not able to add my blog.

  3. No plugin active I got the same error with the new 1.3.... No blog adding....
    Wordpress 2.8

  4. Same again, self-hosted Wordpress blog - worked with previous version of this app (although that one wouldn't save local drafts). XML-RPC options box ticked.

  5. This solved the problem for me with the version prior to 1.3:
    http://wordpress.org/support/topic/130095?replies=8

    But the new Wordpress app appears not to work anyway, so I'm not sure this will work now.

  6. I'm running WP 2.8 on fully updated Centos with Apache installed just like Centos give it to me (no tweaks). I'm running WP with only one plugin, Spam Karma 2. iPhone 3.0 with the WP for iPhone 3.0 app returns the error noted above and the fix posted by Bodhipaksa does not work for me. The old iPhone app broke when I installed WP 2.8 (I think). The url for my blog is http://southofdallas.com.

  7. @Grimalkins-
    You don't mention what the URL of your blog is, but if it's the domain you use your email address, shappee.com it looks like you blog is at http://www.shappee.com/private/. Looks like you have the blog marked as private, which means the WP iPhone app has no way of communicating with your WordPress install because the XML-RPC end point (most likely http://www.shappee.com/private/xmlrpc.php) and RSD URL (http://www.shappee.com/private/xmlrpc.php?rsd) are not reachable, they always return an error or redirect to the login page.

    @fabien.waroux -
    There is not RSD link provided in your blog at http://ultra-press.fr/ this is likely because your theme is missing the wp_head() function call, see http://josephscott.org/archives/2009/04/wordpress-theme-authors-dont-forget-the-wp_head-function/ for more info.

    @mauko -
    What's the URL for your blog?

    @smallstories -
    I looked at http://blog.smallstories.co.uk/ and didn't see anything obvious that would cause a problem (has the RSD link, RSD URL provides correct info, XML-RPC end point responses as expected). Does the app provide any specific error? We need to figure out where the app is having problems to pin down what is going on.

  8. Just for grins I loaded Blogwriter Lite on my iPhone. It connected to my blog on the first attempt.

  9. I did the same thing, rshol. The only drawback is that BlogWriter can't handle tags. But then that's better than not being able to handle anything!

  10. @josephscott: http://www.bodhipaksa.com/blog/xmlrpc.php?rsd seems to be working just fine. And the app version before 1.3 could connect to my blog no problem. In fact the new version sometimes does, usually just after I make some change like reinstall the app or re-upload my .htaccess file, which has the following code in it:

    <Files xmlrpc.php>
    SecFilterInheritance Off
    </Files>

    Any suggestions gratefully received!

  11. Adding a trailing slash to the domain name in the app seems to have helped it more reliably connect with my blog (I have an .htaccess rule involving trailing slashes). I still sometimes get taken to the "edit blog" page, but once I hit "save" and go back to the app home screen I can connect to my blog again. I hope this helps someone and that it's not just a flash in the pan.

  12. @josephscott

    It's working now :) The only thing I can think that I did differently was in the add blog page put my blog address as http://www.myblogaddress.com - before (when it failed to work) I entered it as http://www.myblogaddress.com

    Many thanks!

    Hated to do thus as I really likes the iPhone wordpress app, but I resorted to buying Blogpress, and it worked instantly with my blog I just posted a mobile blog entry from watching a fireworks show... I just have to figure out how to link from the app... Sorry I hope you get this XML/rpc issue worked out until that time I will be using Blogpress.

  16. It is apparent that there is a major problem with this app and self hosted blogs running current versions of WordPress. Everything else, from Windows Live Writer, to Scribefire, to other iPhone apps connects to my blog without the slightest hiccup. Hope the devs can sort this issue out quickly, I don't think the problem is on our end.

  17. @VanishingPoint -
    Your RSD URL - http://vanishingpoint.edublogs.org/xmlrpc.php?rsd - won't load. It returns a page that says "The page you are looking for is temporarily unavailable. Please try again later." instead of the XML that the iPhone app needs.

    @kautz001 -
    The WordPress iPhone app is designed to work only with WordPress/WordPress.com blogs, not blogs hosted on blogspot.com

    @rshol -
    I don't see any obvious problems with your site that would cause problems for the iPhone app. That said I do have a theory about why it isn't working and have started talking with the app devs to see if we can confirm my theory and if so get it fixed.

  18. Josephscott,

    Thank you very much. I hope your theory pans out.

  19. I also am trying to set up my blogs with this app on my iPhone. Getting same error message.
    We could not find the XML-RPC service for your blog.
    Blogs are
    bsdnewbery.edublogs.org
    myrealia.edublogs.org
    springville.edublogs.org

    Any help greatly appreciated.

  20. @josephscott - Would you mind giving me your thoughts on why I am getting the "XML-RPC Service for you blog cannot be found" error on http://www.michaelgcohen.com

    Thanks a ton

    Hello,

    I am also getting the XML-RPC error and I'd love to hear your thoughts. My URL is: http://www.thesunsethouse.com

    Thanks!

  22. Had the same problem. Did everything in the FAQ to no avail. Finally changed my theme to default, connected via iPhone and then changed theme back. Worked like a charm. Good Luck!

  23. I am still having problem setting up my blog site to iPhone Wordpress and getting really really annoyed with the "cannot find XML-RPC" error. Enough is enough, I want this solved NOW. I tried following instructions from FAQ and zip-nada, same results! What is up with this? Had to delete the software on my iPhone twice just to get 1.3. But kept saying 1.2.1.1 but was told that this is the correct version. Golly!

    I'm aggravated by this problem.

  24. Maybe your not as stupid to overlook this as I was ;)

    But if your front page is a static page then you actually have to put in the url to your blog page /blog or /news or which ever page you specified as your 'posts' page...

    Like I saud maybe your not so stupid but I was for at least half an hour ;)

  25. I was having the same XML-RPC error and it was related to my use of "Angsuman's Authenticated WordPress Plugin" to make this blog only visible to those with a password. By default, if not logged in, I would be redirected to the wp-login.php page. Simply add following line in the wp-login.php header at everything is working fine:

    <link rel="EditURI" type="application/rsd+xml" title="RSD" href="<?php bloginfo('pingback_url'); ?>?rsd" />

    So the solution going forward (without me having to change the wp-login.php every time there is an update) is to either add this line to the default wp-login.php file, or to allow the user to define the full path to the xmlrpc.php file on the iPhone app ;-)

  26. XML-RPC issue solved now for me, thanks rbstiff. Upgraded to 2.8.1 (probably had nothing to do with anything) reverted to the default theme, the app allowed itself to be configured, changed back to custom theme, all is working well. While this solves the issue for me, something is still wrong with the app that needs to be fixed.

  27. Even though I have worked around the XML-RPC issues, the iPhone app still does not like my theme enough that it won''t display a preview of a post with the theme. I'm using a theme called Slight 1.2 from Thematology http://www.thematology.com/ . The only changes I have made are to add a logo picture in the top bar and plug in a tag cloud.

  28. It looks like I'm not the only one having this issue. Unfortunately it doesn't look like a clear solution has been offered. Can anyone give me a suggestion on what to do to add my blog without the XML-RPC error message?

  29. @Keenan. If you are using something other than the default theme, switch to default and try to connect.

  30. I tried default on one of my blogs, and no go, but it works on the other thats hosted with the same account on the same server. I'll try to swap themes with the working one, but its seems odd.
