What kind of black magic does one need to do to a theme to make it capable of showing up in the theme preview mode on the iPhone?

Note: I'm not asking how to make it refresh the theme, I got that (delete and re-add the blog), I'm asking how to get it to load the theme in the first place. I've been unable to get the theme preview mechanism to work at all. It just says that the theme preview is unavailable, or something to that effect.
