Bad username/pass?
-
I have entered in my URL correctly (self hosted), as well as my username and password, and I get a message saying "Communication Error: Bad username or password".
I have checked and double checked, my username and password for my admin account to my website are correct. Is there any help I could get on this? Where should I start? Oh, and I have WP 2.8.5.
-
A day later and still no luck. My user info is correct, so I do not know what to do.
-
How are you entering your URL? We've seen one report that including the "http://" before the URL caused a bad username or password error. Try entering your URL like this:
example.comif you haven't already. -
My attempts have been without the "http://". However, i have tried both ways just in case, and still no luck. Thanks though =)
-
Hi all,
All previous attempts failed but when I changed the URL to point to my admin.php page it worked straight away. Also follow any other error message the Iphone gives you through the application :)
Hope that helps everyone!!
-
Well, I attempted
example.com/wp-admin/as well asexample.com/wp-admin/admin.phpand still the same message..."Communication Error: Bad user name or password"
and I do have my correct blog username/pass -
Hi Tempestchasing,
We're looking to pin this down, but it's a slippery thing. If you're willing to grant me temp access to your blog so that I can watch variables in the debugger, that would be helpful...
Naturally, it's up to you. I'm working for Automattic on the project and will promptly forget any login info you share...
ping me at john@(at)ohnbickerstaff(dot)com if you'd like to try...
Thanks

I'm having the same problem. When adding the blog, it correctly denies a wrong password, but when I correct the password, it let's me "through" but the I get repeated messages about bad user and password.
To be clear, it seems that it's a later stage problem, not the initial log in.
-
Forgot to mention, mine is self hosted. Just upgraded to the latest version too.
-
Solved!!! Remove the trailing / from your Url.
At least that worked for me.My blog is "http://virtualinfinity.net/wordpress/" but I had to use "virtualinfinity.net/wordpress" to set it up.
This could probably be fixed in the code, but a good work around for now.
-
Removing that extra / and, or 'admin.php' did not work from my side... darn!
-
Oh by the way I just tried opening two of my blogs via the first WP app (version 1.21.1) and it works fine. I logged right in!
Hope this helps identifying the issue(s) with V 2.0
-
John,
Is this your correct e-mail? john@(at)ohnbickerstaff(dot)com ? (taking out the in-brackets of course)
Thanks

The same thing is happening to me. I have a self hosted blog that was set up through dreamhost's auto installer and is updated to 2.8.6.
I get one or more bad username/password errors when I try to submit a new post.
Also, I'm trying to upload a picture with my post, the first one I've done so my uploads directory was not present. I keep getting communication errors saying that the directory can't be created. I've since gone back and created the directory and set it up with the proper writable permissions. I have another blog setup in the same way and I've used the app to upload photos from it recently without issue.
Also, after a few of these errors the image is removed and a white square shows up instead. This gives me an invalid image error.
My url is entered without an http:// or a trailing /.

Hi Serge,
Yes that's it.

I'm having a problem with posting from iPhone too - If i just do a text only post it works fine, but if I include an image I get an error 500 and bad username/pass error. I'm on win2k3 server. Error from logs below:
2009-11-18 15:10:31 POST /wordpress/xmlrpc.php - - (myIP deleted) HTTP/1.1 wp-iphone/2.0 - 200 3100
2009-11-18 15:10:32 POST /wordpress/xmlrpc.php - - (myIP deleted) HTTP/1.1 wp-iphone/2.0 - 200 1092
2009-11-18 15:10:35 POST /wordpress/xmlrpc.php - - (myIP deleted) HTTP/1.1 wp-iphone/2.0 - 200 408
2009-11-18 15:10:45 POST /wordpress/xmlrpc.php - - (myIP deleted) HTTP/1.1 wp-iphone/2.0 - 500 1112
2009-11-18 15:10:46 POST /wordpress/xmlrpc.php - - (myIP deleted) HTTP/1.1 wp-iphone/2.0 - 200 618The image is in fact uploaded correctly to wp-content/uploads/2009/11
I've set the wordpress folder privileges to include write and modify for IIS_WPG and IIS_USER
Any ideas please?

Lloydp,
You're probably aware of this, but for other readers...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/500_errorI don't know off the top of my head what could be causing that, although configuring IIS can be challenging. My own setups for WP have been on Mac and Linux, so I'm not experienced with WP on Windows...
I'll see if anyone else can shed some light on this question...
-
Serge,
I just posted a Draft to your blog from the app... I was able to get in with the username/password you gave me...
I wonder if the app is tripping over unusual characters in a password... Since I was able to get in, will you try with the password and username you gave me and see what happens?
-
Thanks John,
I did try with the same password and user name but I still get the same error message.
"Communication Error: Bad username or password"I've deleted the other Wordpress 1.2 app just in case it would create a conflict somewhere. and reinstalled the version 2 but am still getting the same error.
I also tried it with a very easy password to see if it has something to do with odd characters etc (ie; *# ...)
but no go still.Strange it works from your end.
This is a long shot and I can't say I know anything about it, but my iphone was once jail-broken, which is now back to factory settings. Could this be the cause or culprit? ( I doubt it but just so you know, in case)
Thanks

John,
Here is something interesting;
When I get that error message "Communication Error: Bad username or password" as I mentioned.
1. I have to click the "OK" button about 5 times for it to stop popping up.
2. Only after I can go to the "Blogs" page list (on your app) and its blank.
3. When I start the app again, do I then see the particular Blogs name on the apps!
4. But! it crashes the app when I try to delete that new Blog I just created. (the one I still can't log-in)
Make sense?
-
Ps. I'm using the previous iPhone 3G 8g with latest version.
Anyhooo... thanks for trying none the less.
Serge
-
Serge,
Since I was able to add your blog myself with no issues, I'm not sure where that leaves us... I suppose that a previously jailbroken phone *could* have issues, but I've not played around with that kind of scenario enough to be sure.
Also, it's not impossible that your download from iTunes was corrupted in some way (it's rare, but possible) so as a last resort you may try deleting and re-downloading the app to your iTunes...
I have one more test I want to try - I'll let you know if I find anything useful...
-
Serge,
Please try entering your blog url without entering "http://www"
I've reproduced most of the symptoms you describe if I enter http://www before your blog name, but if I just enter the blog sans any protocol stuff, the blog adds fine.
Drop me a line and let me know if this works...
-
Serge - let me know if you've already tried this and are still getting the error simply when entering your blog without any http or www
-
OMG! that's all it was!!! I had tried it without the 'htt://' but kept the www. So there you go John, it works fine now when I leave that out "http://www." as you suggested! Geeze sorry about that but am glad it now works and thanks so much for sticking around !
Looking forward to do some iPhone blogin now. :]
-
No problem! Glad to know you're in. I found something buggy in there anyway, and I'm going to make a change so that even with the "prefix" it should work.... So thanks for your help and letting me access your blog temporarily - that helped me track it down.
With your permission, I'd like to hold on to that temp access through the weekend so I can test my new code connecting to your blog...
-
Sure feel free John, (take your time) I trust you.
Thanks again. :]
-
I still haven't got to the bottom of this (see my posting above). Any windows expert able to help please?
Is there a way I can get some better logging of the error from wp or php? I'm not a php programmer.

I appreciate the frustration - can you successfully upload a picture from Firefox or IE?
Preferrably test from some remote box that is NOT the Windows IIS instance so that you're making an internet connection and not going internally (I recall from my old days on Windows that permissions would behave in odd ways on the IIS machine itself...)
-
Serge - I'm done now - feel free to kill that account... Thanks!
